| The IBM iSeries, like the IBM System/38 and AS/400, does not and cannot recovery all types of configuration unit failures. This is especially important for those failures which have an associated job still attached to a failed unit. When a configuration unit failure occures, the iSeries will attempt to "recover" from the failure. After the retry limit is exhausted, the system cancels recovery and the unit cannot be used until an operator takes the necessary steps to make it available. The process involved in making the faled unit available can include ending writers, ending jobs, and varying off and on various devices, control units and lines. This process can be time consuming for an operator and ultimately result in productivity loss. In addition, this process cannot be accomplished from a remote location which is "down" due to a failure. |

Automated Recovery
EXTEND/Line Monitor recovers all routine configuration failures that occure when there is no one around to correct the situation manually. And even if an operator is available to handle a failure, EXTEND/Line Monitor can assist in the manual recovery of the failure.
When EXTEND/Line Monitor is run in unattended mode, remote users who would normally be incapacitated by a rountine configuration failure, experience minimal downtime when a central operator is not avialable to recover the failure. This relieves operators from many of the time consuming activities associated with configuration failures and provides greater access to your iSeries. When EXTEND/Line Monitor is run in attended mode, throught the use of manually executed commands, operators can still enjoy the benefits of automated failure recovery.
When EXTEND/Line Monitor detects a failed condition, it takes all of the necessary steps to make the failed unit available including:
- Disconnecting or ending all attached jobs.
- Varying off all units involved in the failure.
- Rebuilding and damaged units.
- Varying on all units effected by the failure.
- Executing an exit routine which can be used to restart any writers or jobs canceled due to the failure.
- Logging the failure and the corrective actions taken.
-
Maximum Recovery Limit
EXTEND/Line Monitor also provides a maximum recovery limit which you can specify for the unattended exection mode. If a particular unit continually fails, the unit will be suspended from recovery and EXTEND/Line Monitor will issue a message to notify the system operator of the unrecoverable condition.
-
Failure Logs
Extend/Line Monitor automatically logs all detected failures to provide management with valuable information which can be used to document and diagnose such failures. In addition, all actions taken by EXTEND/Line Monitor can also be logged. These logs are then available for review via an on-line inquiry or batch listing.
-
Selective Monitoring
EXTEND/Line Monitor will, by default, monitor all configuration units (including all lines, control units, and devices) on your iSeries. However, by using the attended mode commands, EXTEND/Line Monitor can be used to monitor all units, generically all line, control units, or devices, or specifically and individual unit. In addition, any particular unit can be excluded from the monitoring process altogether.
-
Availability Periods
Through the use of EXTEND/Line Monitor’s "Availabiltiy Periods" feature, you can now specify when a particular unit or group of units is available for use. If EXTEND/Line Monitor detects a unit which is available in a time period when it should not be so, it will automatically make the unit and all dependent units unavailable. Conversely, if EXTEND/Line Monitor detects a unit which is in a varied off or failed state in a period of time when it should be available, EXTEND/Line Monitor will automatically maek the unit available for use.
