The iSeries Menu Management System
In the past, menus were usually designed to group related application functions together for ease of reference. This was normally done according to the functions offered by a particular application system. Invariably dozens of menu display files and programs would be created to control access to your applications. Whenever a user required a different set of options, another menu display file and program would be created to accommodate the need. Each menu program would have the same option commands defined over and over. This is not only a time consuming process but opens applications to many security and management problems.

In recent times, the evolution and diversity of the iSeries user community has made it necessary to approach the concept of application menus and menu management itself differently. Today’s user requires the ability to bridge the application system barrier and access the specific functions which apply to his or her job regardless of application. This need for application flexibility and security inspired H & H Technologies to develop EXTEND/Menu, the Menu Management System for the iSeries.
EXTEND/Menu meets the need for application flexibility and security by allowing you to design application menus for a specific user, group of users, or globally for all users. The menus created using EXTEND/Menu, contain the application functions needed to satisfy the job tasks for an individual user, or the application functions which relate to the job tasks for a group of users, or the application functions relating to the job tasks which can be accessed by all users. With this approach, a user only sees the menu options containing the application functions which he or she needs and is authorized to access.
  1. Soft Coding

With the constantly changing user environment, menus must change accordingly. EXTEND/Menu lets you add or change menu options, command keys, or entire menus, dynamically, at a moments notice without any interruption to the application user. In EXTEND/Menu each menu, menu option, and command key is "soft-coded" in the software package. Soft coding enables the attributes of a menu, the menu options and command keys themselves, or the commands executed by a menu option or command key to be changed, re-arranged, or even removed by simply modifying the soft coded information.

  2. Common Access Repository

EXTEND/Menu was developed based on the "Common-Access-Repository" theory of application management. Using CAR enables you to define the commands required to access your applications in one centralized location. This eliminates command duplication, reduces the chance of error, and streamlines the menu management process.

  3. Security

EXTEND/Menu’s approach to application security ensures that users can only access the application functions shown on a specific menu. This security can be enhanced even further through the use of the expiration dates, suspension capabilities, availability periods and password protection provided in the software.

  4. Consistency

EXTEND/Menu enables you to create menus which are consistent in appearance and operation and which always conform to the SAA/CUA guidelines pertaining to menus. In addition, every EXTEND menu is designed to handle group job menu options. And since EXTEND/Menu contains its own group job management facility, conflicts with other group job menus, even in other software products such as OfficeVision/400, is eliminated.

  5. Networking

Many application systems are now being distributed and run on multiple iSeries’s, making menu management a key concern of many information system managers. EXTEND/Menu enables you to manage your application menus on one iSeries and distribute all or selected menu information to any number of remote iSeries’s either through the use of magnetic media or directly through your network.
